Cystic Fibrosis: actual treatment and future perspectives with nanotechnology
Introducción: Actualmente, los tratamientos existentes para tratar la fibrosis quística (FQ) están diseñados para controlar sus síntomas, consistentes principalmente en retención de moco e infección crónica. Se propone la vía pulmonar como alternativa para la administración de los fármacos, principalmente antimicrobianos. Sin embargo, su rápido aclaramiento, que conduce a niveles bajos de fármaco e incremento de los regímenes posológicos, así como la aparición de efectos adversos, hacen de la nanotecnología una estrategia interesante para esta enfermedad.
Objetivo: estudiar y analizar los diferentes sistemas nanoparticulares existentes para su uso por vía pulmonar, concretando en el uso de sistemas lipídicos para el tratamiento de la FQ.
Método: se realizó una búsqueda no sistemática de artículos en diferentes bases de datos, en los últimos 10 años principalmente, siguiendo pautas establecidas de palabras clave.
Resultados: Los progresos que se han conseguido en los últimos años hacen que la FQ pase a ser una enfermedad de adultos. Los tratamientos que se están usando en la actualidad están siendo cada vez más desplazados por otras alternativas, como los sistemas nanoparticulares, siendo idóneos para la administración pulmonar debido a su pequeño tamaño, su liberación sostenida y su elevada biocompatibilidad. Entre éstos, destacan los liposomas por su similitud estructural con el surfactante pulmonar, así como por su capacidad de destruir las biopelículas bacterianas. La mayoría de las formulaciones encontradas contenían un solo fármaco.
Conclusión: Existen evidencias científicas que indican que la investigación debe dirigirse hacia el desarrollo de formulaciones que sean capaces de destruir la biopelícula.Introduction: Currently, the management of treatments in cystic fibrosis (CF) is mainly focused to control symptoms, which consist of mucus retention and chronic infection. The pulmonary route is proposed as an interesting alternative for administering drugs, especially antimicrobials. However, the rapid clearance of these, which leads to low drug levels and increased dosage regimens, as well as the appearance of adverse effects, make nanotechnology an interesting strategy for this disease.
Objective: to study and analyze the different nanoparticulate systems available for use via the lung, specifying the use of lipid systems for the treatment of CF.
Method: a non-systematic search of articles in different databases was carried out, mainly in the last 10 years, following established guidelines for selecting keywords.
Results: The progress in recent years makes CF become an adult disease. Current treatments are increasingly being displaced by other alternatives, such as nanoparticular systems, being suitable for pulmonary administration due to their small size, sustained release and high biocompatibility. Among these, liposomes stand out for their structural similarity to lung surfactant, as well as for their ability to destroy bacterial biofilms. Most of the formulations contained a single drug.
Conclusion: Scientific literature evidenced that research studies should be directed towards the development of formulations that are intended to destroy the biofilm
Origin and main ramifications of coeliac artery in Cerdocyon thous
Background: Cerdocyon thous is the canid with the greatest geographical coverage in South America. The aim of this study was to describe the origin, skeletopy, length and main branches of the coeliac artery in C. thous. Materials and methods: The dissections were performed on 14 cadavers of adult specimens, 6 males and 8 females, with a rostrosacral length average of 67.00 ± 4.7 cm and 62.09 ± 5.7 cm, respectively. The specimens were collected dead on highways on the banks of the Atlantic Forest (Rio de Janeiro) and the Pampa biome (Rio Grande do Sul) in Brazil. The cadavers were fixed and preserved in a formaldehyde solution until dissection. The coeliac artery was dissected, the length was measured “in situ” and its main branches were recorded. The coeliac artery emerged as a single artery in all dissected animals. Results: The average length of the coeliac artery was 1.43 ± 0.17 cm in males and 1.39 mm ± 0.24 cm in females, with no significant difference in this measurement between sexes. The predominant skeletopy was at the level of the second lumbar vertebra (57.1%), positioned on average 1.43 cm cranially to the cranial mesenteric artery. In most individuals (92.9%), the classic trifurcation was formed: the coeliac artery branched into the hepatic, left gastric, and lienal arteries. Only 1 male animal presented a bifurcation formed between the hepatic artery and a gastrolienal trunk. Conclusions: These anatomical characteristics are similar to those of other species of the Canidae family, possibly due to their phylogenetic proximity
Optimizing Classification Ensembles via a Genetic Algorithm for a Web-Based Educational System
Abstract. Classification fusion combines multiple classifications of data into a single classification solution of greater accuracy. Feature extraction aims to reduce the computational cost of feature measurement, increase classifier efficiency, and allow greater classification accuracy based on the process of deriving new features from the original features. This paper represents an approach for classifying students in order to predict their final grades based on features extracted from logged data in an educational web-based system. A combination of multiple classifiers leads to a significant improvement in classification performance. By weighing feature vectors representing feature importance using a Genetic Algorithm (GA) we can optimize the prediction accuracy and obtain a marked improvement over raw classification. We further show that when the number of features is few, feature weighting and transformation into a new space works efficiently compared to the feature subset selection. This approach is easily adaptable to different types of courses, different population sizes, and allows for different features to be analyzed.
Effectiveness and safety of obeticholic acid in a Southern European multicenter cohort of patients with primary biliary cholangitis and suboptimal response to ursodeoxycholic acid
Background
Obeticholic acid (OCA) was recently approved as the only on-label alternative for patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) with intolerance or suboptimal response to ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA). However, few data are available outside clinical trials.
Aim
To assess the effectiveness and safety of OCA in a real-world cohort of patients with non-effective UDCA therapy.
Methods
Open-label, prospective, real-world, multicentre study, enrolling consecutive patients who did not meet Paris II criteria, from 18 institutions in Spain and Portugal. Effectiveness was assessed by the changes in GLOBE and UK-PBC scores from baseline. POISE and Paris II criteria were evaluated after 12 months of OCA . Liver fibrosis was evaluated by FIB-4 and AST to platelet ratio index (APRI).
Results
One hundred and twenty patients were eligible, median time since PBC diagnosis 9.3 (4.0-13.8) years, 21.7% had cirrhosis, and 26.7% received had previous or concomitant treatment with fibrates. Seventy-eight patients completed at least 1 year of OCA. The Globe-PBC score decreased to 0.17 (95% CI 0.05 to 0.28; P = 0.005) and the UK-PBC score decreased to 0.81 (95% CI -0.19 to 1.80; P = 0.11). There was a significant decrease in alkaline phosphatase of 81.3 U/L (95% CI 42.5 to 120; P < 0.001), ALT 22.1 U/L (95% CI 10.4 to 33.8; P < 0.001) and bilirubin 0.12 mg/dL (95% CI 0 to 0.24; P = 0.044). FIB-4 and APRI remained stable. According to the POISE criteria, 29.5% (23 out of 78) achieved response. The adverse events rate was 35%; 11.67% discontinued (8.3% due to pruritus).
Conclusions
This study supports data from phase III trials with significant improvement of PBC-Globe continuous prognostic marker score among OCA-treated patients with good tolerability
Strange particle production in proton-proton collisions at TeV with ALICE at the LHC
The production of mesons containing strange quarks (K, ) and both
singly and doubly strange baryons (, Anti-, and
+Anti-) are measured at central rapidity in pp collisions at
= 0.9 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC. The results are
obtained from the analysis of about 250 k minimum bias events recorded in 2009.
Measurements of yields (dN/dy) and transverse momentum spectra at central
rapidities for inelastic pp collisions are presented. For mesons, we report
yields () of 0.184 0.002 stat. 0.006 syst. for K and
0.021 0.004 stat. 0.003 syst. for . For baryons, we find
= 0.048 0.001 stat. 0.004 syst. for , 0.047
0.002 stat. 0.005 syst. for Anti- and 0.0101 0.0020 stat.
0.0009 syst. for +Anti-. The results are also compared with
predictions for identified particle spectra from QCD-inspired models and
provide a baseline for comparisons with both future pp measurements at higher

Anisotropic flow of charged hadrons, pions and (anti-)protons measured at high transverse momentum in Pb-Pb collisions at TeV
The elliptic, , triangular, , and quadrangular, , azimuthal
anisotropic flow coefficients are measured for unidentified charged particles,
pions and (anti-)protons in Pb-Pb collisions at TeV
with the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Results obtained with the
event plane and four-particle cumulant methods are reported for the
pseudo-rapidity range at different collision centralities and as a
function of transverse momentum, , out to GeV/.
The observed non-zero elliptic and triangular flow depends only weakly on
transverse momentum for GeV/. The small dependence
of the difference between elliptic flow results obtained from the event plane
and four-particle cumulant methods suggests a common origin of flow
fluctuations up to GeV/. The magnitude of the (anti-)proton
elliptic and triangular flow is larger than that of pions out to at least
GeV/ indicating that the particle type dependence persists out

Centrality dependence of charged particle production at large transverse momentum in Pb-Pb collisions at TeV
The inclusive transverse momentum () distributions of primary
charged particles are measured in the pseudo-rapidity range as a
function of event centrality in Pb-Pb collisions at
TeV with ALICE at the LHC. The data are presented in the range
GeV/ for nine centrality intervals from 70-80% to 0-5%.
The Pb-Pb spectra are presented in terms of the nuclear modification factor
using a pp reference spectrum measured at the same collision
energy. We observe that the suppression of high- particles strongly
depends on event centrality. In central collisions (0-5%) the yield is most
suppressed with at -7 GeV/. Above
GeV/, there is a significant rise in the nuclear modification
factor, which reaches for GeV/. In
peripheral collisions (70-80%), the suppression is weaker with almost independently of . The measured nuclear
